Welcome to the first edition of Sage Advice, my new column where I answer reader questions about chronic illness and disability. Have a question of your own? Send me a message!

Dear Sage,

Like most folks with chronic illnesses, I have a wide range of coping mechanisms. I haven't discussed my illness or coping mechanisms with my coworkers. When we all worked from home, I could manage well; however, now that we're back in the office, do I tell my coworkers and boss? Do I out myself as disabled?

Sincerely,

Closeted

Dear Closeted,

There are two questions here.

First is the legal question: Should you officially disclose your disability to your workplace? The answer involves the ADA, HR, documentation, etc. I am not a lawyer, but I will give you some information.

Second is the emotional question. It is about stigma, identity, and social dynamics. Should you “out yourself” as disabled to your coworkers and boss? This is a rich and vulnerable question, and I will do my best to reflect on it for you.
