There has been murmuring online recently about creating a chronic illness and disability category on Substack. I think that is a fantastic idea, but until it happens, I thought it would be useful to compile a list of writers on Substack who focus on these topics.
This is a monumental task, which is awesome because it means there are so many incredible people writing about chronic illness and disability on Substack!
Here is my first pass at it, and I am dividing it into two parts.
First is this post. I have started by simply listing and tagging around 100 authors to get things going. This is a working list, and I would love to continue editing and adding to it. If you don’t see yourself here, please DM me or comment below, and I will try to add you in a future update! My list includes people who are creating or writing about chronic illness and disability. On the other end, if you find yourself on this list and want to be removed, please let me know, and I will do so immediately. Or if you have a correction, I am happy to make changes. I would love to add descriptions and categories in the future (let me know how you think I should do this), but I am working as spoons allow and figured updates could come over time.
Second is this spreadsheet. Using this form, you can add your information yourself and give a little more contextual information about your writing. I’m taking a bit of a gamble here with the internet gods, but I’m trusting that this is a kind enough corner of Substack that people will add themselves with dignity. It’s incredibly basic; I will moderate as needed, so there might be a slight delay.
In researching this post, I’ve seen similar posts by Kathryn Vercillo and Dysautonomia Dietician, as well as the incredible resource that is the Spooniverse. If others have already done this, I would love to connect and cross-reference with your work.
I ask that you give me some grace here; this is my first time trying something like this, and I welcome any suggestions to improve either list. I mean this to be a resource for the community, but it sprang from creating a list for my own reference, so at the very least it is useful to me. I created this list based on what my algorithm has shown me over time, Substack searches, looking through other people’s recommendations, and various lists I have found online, so this is by no means a scientific process and is biased by my own internet bubble. For example, I have ME/CFS, so a lot of these writers also focus on energy-limiting chronic illness.
A couple of notes. For self-titled writers, I have simply tagged the author rather than listing the publication. Most of these Substacks are currently active, but several are inactive with substantial archives. Writers run the gamut from tiny Substacks to huge, well-established publications, and are listed in alphabetical order.
